I have worked on a number of digital projects–from social media campaigns to websites and data visualization to digital archival research–over the years and I often use this experience to inform my digital pedagogy. I have run social media campaigns for the A.W. Mellon Comics Workshop at UW-Madison, for the UW-Madison Writing Center, and for Joshua Calhoun’s “Shakespeare and Media” course (example pictured at left). I have also worked on several different websites, including the 2014 redesign of the Writing Fellows website for UW-Madison and as a digital content researcher and designer for the Africa Cartoons website from 2014-2016.
When I use this experience to teach students to create their own social media campaigns and websites, we analyze digital media as models and consider the opportunities and drawbacks different platforms provide. When I teach students to create social media campaigns, I suggest they take advantage of digital affordances to not just broadcast, but also interact with followers and other potential stakeholders.
